WESTMINSTER, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Westminster police chief said it may take several weeks before the investigation is finished after a 14-year-old died in when the car authorities say he was driving crashed following a chase on Black Friday.

Chief Dean Awalt said he was waiting on the Highway Patrol's investigation, which could take 30 days, into a pursuit that ended in a fatal crash early Friday morning.

A Westminster officer tried pull a car over that ran a red light and almost collided with another car at the intersection of U.S. 123 and Highway 183, according to Awalt.

The car fled and later crashed along Highway 24, where troopers said the 14-year-old driver and two 16-year-old passengers were thrown from the car.

Coroner Karl Addis identified the driver as Jesse Logan Hannah, of Seneca. Addis said his final autopsy report is pending based off toxicology reports.

Hannah's family said they do not believe reports their son was behind the wheel.

"Coroner come and told me and said there was alcohol in his system, but we don't feel like he was driving," his mother, Melinda Hannah told FOX Carolina on Friday. "We want his name cleared because he didn't exhibit to is that kind of risk-taking behavior."

Awalt said the Westminster Police Department has an in-depth chase policy that will be looked at as part of the investigation. Until the investigation is complete, he said there would be no updates in the case.

The officer involved in the pursuit is on leave pending the outcome of the department's investigation, Awalt said.

The Highway Patrol, Westminster Police Department and Oconee County Coroner's Office are investigating the wreck.
