UNION, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Union police said they arrested a man after he left his 2-month-old child alone in his apartment.

Police said they were called to the West Main Street apartment on Friday night after a woman who stopped by to check on the child discovered him sitting alone on the floor in his bouncy chair.

The woman waited about 20 minutes before the boy's father, 39-year-old Christopher Vaughan, returned home, according to the police report. That is when she called 911 to report the neglect, police said.

When officers spoke with Vaughan, he said the baby's mother left the day before with the rent money and he had walked across the street to use a phone to find her, according to the report.

Vaughan admitted leaving the baby alone but said he was not gone long, according to police.

Police said they smelled, "a strong odor of alcohol coming from his person," and when they asked him, Vaughan said he had been drinking. The report said Vaughan appeared unsteady on his feet.

During their investigation, police said they learned the baby recently had surgery for a stomach issue.

The Department of Social Services was called to the apartment to assist in the case. Vaughan was arrested on a charge of unlawful conduct towards a child.
