GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Anyone making their way down Main Street at Camperdown Way is bound to see it - not one, but five cameras on one street pole.

All the cameras are looking around, eyeing whatever is happening at the intersection.

"I didn't notice that there were so many cameras there," said Kofi Trim.

Trim was like many at that intersection Tuesday that didn't seem to notice the cameras until FOX Carolina showed them.

It may look like a lot, but Greenville Police said they are testing the cameras out as part of a new system that could go citywide.

"(It's) closer to a 360 (degree view), as opposed to a camera that gives us more of a defined area," said Greenville Police Cap. Mike Madden.

Greenville police put in for capital improvements earlier this year, and they're looking right now at what, specifically, to invest in.

Improvements include additional patrol staffing and upgrading downtown cameras, nearly 120 in all.

The new system installed is in the testing phase, though they stress it works and is monitored 24 hours a day. Police said they want to know how well the cameras work before they buy them.

"We look at functionality - what does the camera do, what area will it cover," Madden said. "Again, the quality of the video is important, and there's a number of factors there that we weigh in."

Police said there's also another factor they're taking into consideration - aesthetics, or how it looks, before deciding on what to ultimately invest in for upgrades.
