SC regulators approve plans for new area code

Posted: Updated:
CHARLESTON, SC (AP) -

Eastern South Carolina will be getting a new area code.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports (http://bit.ly/1dS5p5T) the Public Service Commission approved plans for a second area code in the Lowcountry and Pee Dee.

The Post and Courier has learned the number will be 854.

The new code will be an addition to the 843 area code now used.

That large section of South Carolina will have two area codes, so everyone will have to dial 10 digits to make a phone call within those areas.

The new code is expected to be implemented around the end of 2014.
