WALHALLA, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Officials said an inmate has been charged after an Upstate man was assaulted while in custody at the Oconee County Detention Center.

Oconee County deputies said they arrested Joshua Campbell, 25, of Mountain Rest, on various charges including first-degree burglary, petit larceny and shoplifting.

While he was in jail, it was initially reported that Campbell fell and was taken to the Oconee Medical Center before being transferred to Greenville Memorial Hospital, according to Captain Steve Pruitt with the detention center and deputies.

Deputies said Campbell was actually assaulted about 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, but they could not say who assaulted him because the Walhalla Police Department is handling the assault investigation.

Millard Jerome Strickland, 35, has been charged with attempted murder in connection with the assault, according to a representative of the Walhalla Police Department.
