SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The city of Spartanburg announced on Thursday that they will be getting a new chief of police.

Alonzo Thompson will be sworn in as the new chief at City Hall on Jan. 23.

Thompson is currently the assistant chief for the Winston-Salem Police Department.

"I am very excited about joining the team in Spartanburg," Thompson said. "As I went through this process and learned more about Spartanburg, what really impressed me the most was the level of cooperation between the city's corporate and nonprofit partners and the community at large."

Thompson has almost 30 years of police experience since starting his career in Winston-Salem in 1984, according to a release from the city of Spartanburg. They also said Thompson served in the U.S. Air Force prior to his police career.
