Officials said just after they warned the public about scammers posing as government and utility workers last week they struck again.
The Newberry County Sheriff's Office said within an hour of warning the public, two men dressed in some kind of uniform and wearing vests went to a house on the Laurens and Newberry County line and falsely claimed to be there to check the electrical lines.
Laurens County deputies say the men showed up to a 91-year-old woman's house Friday afternoon attempting to gain entry into her house. The resident knew to call the authorities and deny them access.
However, on Nov. 28 Newberry deputies say the pair was able to get away with another woman's jewelry. The victim told investigators a man came to her door claiming to be there to cut trees.
"She exited her residence to show him the property line, while they were out there looking at the line, another person came into her home," said Newberry Sheriff Lee Foster. "That suspect went through her belongings and stole some jewelry."
Deputies said the men are driving a reddish or orange pickup truck with a generator in the back. The victim's report the men are in their 30s to 40s and one of them goes by the alias "Tom Rollins."
The Newberry sheriff's office advised residents:
"If you should see this vehicle or if someone approaches your home call 911 immediately. Do not let anyone in your home unless you know them or have called them or you have verified their identity. Do not be lulled into believing them because they are wearing an official looking uniform or equipment or driving an official looking vehicle. Government or utilities do not offer one time deals or services based on quick decisions. Notify local law enforcement as soon as possible with as much information as possible about the criminals."
