Winter weather, ice expected in WNC this weekend

MARS HILL, NC (FOX Carolina) -

An Ice storm warning in effect until 8 P.M. Sunday in parts of western North Carolina

The National Weather Service has issued an ice storm warning that will be in effect through 8pm Sunday in Avery, Burke, Caldwell, McDowell and Mitchell counties.

The NWS warned that freezing rain may lead to a quarter inch or more of ice accumulation in mountainous areas.

Meteorologists said freezing rain will be possible in the area until Sunday evening, when the

precipitation is expected to change over to all rain.

Temperatures are expected to stay in the low 30s and easterly winds with gusts up to 25 miles per hours at the higher elevations, according to the NWS.
