GREENWOOD, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Greenwood County Violent Crimes Unit is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred in the city of Greenwood early Sunday morning.

Coroner Sonny Cox said Desmond Kennedy, 27, died from a single gunshot wound at his home on White Oak Lane just after 5 a.m.

Cox said he was investigating Kennedy's death as a homicide, and that an autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

Police said it appears Kennedy was shot following an argument, but so far, they have not released any other details about the shooting.

FOX Carolina spoke with neighbors who said another violent death in the community is not news they want to hear.

"I saw the street filled with blue lights, flashing lights," said neighbor Wendy Mathis. "I saw the street filled with the aftermath of violence, and that's something you don't want to see anytime."

It seems like tragedy is not something new in the community this year. And the coroner said it is the 17th homicide this year.

Many want the violence to end.

"When you're in a situation you feel bad and like you need to pick up a weapon, think about it, not just young people but anyone," Mathis said. "Just take a moment and think about it, you can't get a life back. You can never get a life back."

Police have not yet said if charges have been filed in connection with Kennedy's death, but they did say they have identified a person of interest in the case.
