Union County deputies said a Buffalo woman is accused of stealing a piece of jewelry from the coffin of a distant relative during her visitation.
On Friday, the family of the 88-year-old woman who passed held a viewing at their home and during the time, a gold and silver brooch was stolen, according to a sheriff's office report.
The woman's daughter told deputies a distant relative by marriage showed up uninvited but was allowed to stay and they suspected she stole the brooch, according to the report.
Another relative at the viewing told deputies they saw the relative, identified as 46-year-old Tammy Lloyd, take the pin off of her mother. Deputies said Lloyd reportedly asked that relative to, "Be her lookout while she took the brooch."
She told Lloyd no, walked away and when she turned back, she saw Lloyd's hand in the casket, according to the report. Lloyd reported told the woman she took the pin to give to her brother, deputies said.
According to the report, the family did not initially report the theft hoping Lloyd would return the brooch, but because she did not and caused a disturbance at the grave side service, they called the sheriff's office.
Deputies said the brooch was valued at $30. Lloyd was arrested and charged with petit larceny, according to the report.
