SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Christmas came early for 50 children in Spartanburg County, as the Spartanburg Police Department held their annual Shop with A Cop event.

The event kicked off Tuesday morning with the first 25 kids at the Walmart at 2151 E. Main St. in Spartanburg. It all began with a meet-and-greet with Santa. Then, each child was paired with a police officer and taken on a $100 shopping spree throughout the store.

The Office of Victims Assistance within the police department helps to put the event on every year and says they invite kids who have been victims of crime or traumatic events, who otherwise may not get to have a Christmas.

"A lot of times these kids have a crisis in their family and the next thing they know is all of these uniforms show up," said Marla Drummond, Victims Specialist at the Spartanburg Police Department. "So this event is to give them a positive experience and also pay it forward."

To help make it a fun time, characters such as Crime Dog Scruff McGuff and the 9-1-1 Fox were also on hand meeting and taking photos with the children. Many kids were quick to scoop up toys, while others also filled their cart with new clothes.

The next 25 kids will be getting their turn to shop with a cop at 2 p.m. at the Walmart on Boiling Springs Road.
