Gov. Nikki Haley says the capital city's rejection of a strong mayor referendum that she publicly backed will not affect her fight to restructure South Carolina state government.

Haley said Tuesday she's as adamant as ever in her push for legislation that transfers more authority and responsibility to the governor's office.

Her comments come a week after Columbia voters defeated an effort to change the city's governance structure. Fifty-seven percent said "no" to transferring authority from the city manager to the elected mayor.

Haley was among lawmakers of both parties to support the change.

Despite the local defeat, Haley says people want state government changed.

Legislation creating a Cabinet-level Department of Administration passed both chambers last session. Passage next year requires them to work out differences in their separate plans.
