South Carolina is 43rd in national health rankings

Posted: Updated:

South Carolina is showing improvement, but still has a long way to go when it comes to health issues. That's the message from the latest "America's Health Rankings" from the United Health Foundation.

South Carolina ranks 43rd overall in 2013. That's up from previous year' ranking, but still near the bottom.

Serious health issues cited for our state include obesity, high incidents of salmonella and chlamydia infections, and low immunizations rates among adolescents.

The report also lists South Carolina as 44th in diabetes cases and 38th in the amount of smokers.

But the key disparity in the state, according to the report, is a gap between high school graduates with good health versus those who have less than a high school education.

"In South Carolina, 51.3 percent of adults aged 25 years and older with at least a high school education report their health is very good or excellent compared to only 26.3 percent with less than a high school education, resulting in a gap of 25.0 percent," said the report.
