Doctor: Talk of flu vaccine mandate should spark conversation

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

New York City has joined New Jersey and Connecticut in requiring flu shots for children under the age of 6, with very few exceptions, and the mandate is sparking debate among many nationwide, including the Carolinas.

Much of the controversy is over the requirement itself, which has many parents outraged, but Dr. Justin Moll with Parkside Pediatrics said that the controversy should spark conversation among people about the flu vaccine in general.

"It's a gray area, though, when you get into mandating those kind of decisions," said Moll.

"I think any time anybody tells a mother what to do, there's always some internal conflict because we always feel like we know what's best for our child," said Cindy Lord, parent of a 6-month-old boy.

There are exceptions to the flu shot mandate in New York City based on religious and medical reasons.  However, individual requests for exceptions will be treated on a case-by-case basis.
