MARIETTA, SC (FOX Carolina) -
An Upstate dog's owner couldn't be more excited that his pup was safe at home Wednesday night after she waited to be rescued for two days.
Levi Black said his dog Stella dropped at least 60 feet down a cliff at Table Rock State Park on Monday.
Black, a friend and Stella were hiking up Pinnacle Trail on Monday. He said he put down his pack and turned around to find that Stella was gone. She'd dropped off the side of a steep rock. A few minutes later, he could see her standing on a ledge, but he couldn't reach her.
He contacted volunteer rescue teams with Pickens County, and Wednesday, a team of six hiked up to Bald Knob, rigged up ropes and repelled down to pull Stella back up to stable ground.
"This is a fairy tale ending. Really, the odds were not in the dog's favor," said Pickens County Emergency Management Director Chuck Haynes, who led the team.
"It was horrible … it's like, I know she would try anything for me. And I was wanting to be there for her too," Black said. "So, it's been a rough two nights knowing how cold it was and rain and all that."
The cliff was a steep vertical drop. Crews said if Stella hadn't hit the ledge there, she could have fallen more than 200 feet.
The volunteers who stepped up to rescue Stella said it was just like any other rescue. They signed up to help anyone in need, even a dog.
