SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Troopers and the coroner's office are investigating a pedestrian's death after he was hit by a car while lying along a Spartanburg road early Friday.

Troopers said the accident happened at 12:50 a.m. along Anita Drive near Southport Road.

Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger said a man was driving home from work when he hit the pedestrian who was already lying in the roadway.

Clevenger identified the pedestrian as Ronnie Patton, 57, of Simpson Street. The coroner said they do not know why Patton was in the road, but an autopsy will be performed to determine his cause of death.

Anyone who may have seen anything or have information on the accident is asked to call the Highway Patrol or Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office.
