ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Mark Holcombe says he couldn't believe his eyes when he saw an envelope stuffed with cash on the road Thursday afternoon.

"I thought it was trash but it was actually cash," Holcombe said.

Holcombe made the discovery at the intersection of the off ramp for Interstate 85 and Highway 86 near the McDonald's restaurant in Anderson County.

"The passing cars had started blowing some of the money out," said Holcombe, who says he got out of his car and started gathering up the money.

Holcombe says he turned all the money he found into the Anderson County Sheriff's Office. "This could be someone's Christmas money," Holcombe said.

At the request of deputies, who are looking for the rightful owner of the money, Fox Carolina is not releasing how much money was found or any other identifying details.

Deputies say they will hold the money for 90 days, and if it isn't claimed it will be given to Holcombe. Holcombe says if he does get the money he will donate it to charity but what he really wants is for the money to end up back in its owner's hands.

Deputies say anyone trying to claim the money should contact them and they will put the person in touch with the officer working the case.
