GREENWOOD, SC (FOX Carolina) -
A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to a decade in prison on Friday for a domestic assault where he choked his girlfriend and threatened to kill her.
The solicitor David Stumbo announced on Friday that Montrey Jones, of Greenwood, pleaded guilty and received the sentence for the attack on April 30.
According to Stumbo, on the night of the attack Jones attacked his girlfriend and chased her into her house, where he choked her in front of her 2-year-old daughter. Jones also had a gun on him during the attack and threatened to kill the woman.
The victim's brother fought off Jones by throwing a TV at his head.
Jones then fled the scene and was taken into custody after a short chase.
Jones pleaded guilty on Monday and was sentenced to 10 years for second-degree burglary, three years for second-degree assault and battery, and three years for failure to stop for a blue light. The sentences will run concurrently.
Circuit Court Judge Frank R. Addy Jr. also sentenced Jones to a consecutive sentence of 30 years suspended to five years probation for attempted murder.
"The probation term will be tolled while Jones serves his 10-year active prison sentence, and the 30 year sentence will hang over Jones while he serves his probation term upon release from prison," said Stumbo. "Domestic abusers must be stopped, and we hope that removing this repeat violent offender from our community sends a message that this type of behavior will not be tolerated."
