COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

A Columbia man was charged with shoplifting after a Lexington County Sheriff's deputy saw him eat a pickled sausage and refused to pay for it.

According to the incident report, deputies were called to the Shell gas station on Harbison Boulevard in Columbia at about 6:45 Sunday evening for a report of a disturbance.  The deputy reported seeing 27-year-old Phillip Tyron Johnson, Jr. eating a pickled sausage.

The report says Johnson tried to leave the store, but the deputy asked him if he was going to pay for the sausage and Johnson said he wasn't. When the deputy told Johnson he could be arrested for shoplifting, the report says "Johnson then stood defensively."

Johnson was arrested and taken to the Lexington County Detention Center on a shoplifting charge. Bond was set at $2,130.
