TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -
It's a "hare" raising tale.
A family's bunnies saved them from a fire.
And here's how.
'Twas the week before Christmas, when all through the house not a creature was stirring...except for the bunnies.
That now has a Tucson family believing in a Christmas miracle.
"My bunnies are my lifesavers. They saved my life and they saved my kids," Nicole Ochotorena said.
Night had fallen.
Nicole, her husband Alex and five of their six children were nestled all snug in their beds.
Maybe visions of sugar plums danced in their heads.
When out in the kitchen there arose such a clatter.
Nicole sprang from her bed to see what was the matter.
"If you ever watched like Bambi--Thumper, how he thumped with his back paw? That's what they kept doing. And Bun Bun and Promise, they were just thumping and thumping and they were running back and forth, back and forth, back and forth," she said.
"So then I looked and I saw the smoke from the cord and then I saw the smoke from underneath the crockpot and that's when I freaked out."
All Nicole could think of was her children.
It was 3:30 in the morning.
None of the home's smoke alarms had gone off.
Everyone else in the house, pets and people, were sound asleep.
But Bun Bun and Promise had sounded the alarm.
"You guys are in trouble. You need to get up and you need to get up now. You need to do this right now," Nicole says her bunnies seemed to be saying.
Nicole called out to her husband.
Everything would be okay.
Then her treasure.
Her family was safe.
Promise and Bun Bun had given their family the gift of their lives.
"All being here safe and where they belong with me. And yeah. That's a miracle within itself. That's what I'm saying. It's a Christmas miracle," Nicole said.
The bunnies are getting a special treat. It's their favorite. Carrots.
And it's Happy Christmas to all, and to all a goodnight!
