CLEMSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Clemson University's President, James Barker, gave his final speech in front of faculty and staff on Wednesday, ahead of his retirement at the end of the month.

During the ceremony, James Barker was recognized for his achievements at the university over the last 14 years and was thanked by faculty and staff for making Clemson "one of the nations top universities."

Barker also addressed the audience, saying, "I want to thank our dedicated staff for all they do, day in and day out, for clemson and for our students. We all know that without the staff, our paychecks would not be deposited. Our buildings, grounds and computers would not be maintained...and students could not be admitted, enrolled, housed, fed, protected and cared for without staff."

President Barker will officially step down on Dec. 31. Clemson has hired former President of West Virginia University, James Clements to replace Barker.
