DNA from glass nabs bike shop robbers

East Longmeadow police said a DNA sample taken from a bloody piece of glass at the scene of a break-in from last March lead them to a Springfield teen as their suspect.

Nine months after the March 23 break-in at the Competitive Edge Ski and Bike Shop, a suspect has been identified as a 16-year-old with a criminal history.

Police said the suspect entered the store through a broken window and cut themselves on the glass.

"When blood evidence is left, it's much more individualized. Finger prints are good, but blood evidence, DNA is very individualized identification," said Sgt. Patrick Manley.

Manley said the store has been broken into three times in the last year and many BMX bikes have been stolen.

"We suspect the same people came back but we don't have physical evidence to prove it was the same person in all three breaks," explained Manley.

Because there was no merchandise taken during the March break-in, the teen will only face charges of breaking and entering and malicious damage.

The owner of the store, Gary Kennedy has been frustrated with all the break-ins and is pleased that the police finally have a suspect.

"I'm just amazed they were able to bring this to some closure," said Kennedy.

Kennedy continued to say they're beefing up security.

"Upgrading security cameras and having our whole security cameras looked at to fortify that better, verifying our glass break so that before they even get in that the alarm would go off," said Kennedy.

Now he has a message for area parents.

"So if parents are seeing bikes coming home or someone's seeing bikes coming home that they know shouldn't be coming home, maybe they should be on the look out for that too," said Kennedy.
