CAMPOBELLO, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A beloved Upstate school custodian, Tom Wilkins, is in the intensive care unit at Spartanburg Regional Hospital after his brother said he found him lying on his bedroom floor, badly beaten.

His brother, Douglas Wilkins, said that Tom has been in the ICU since Monday morning, but as of Wednesday afternoon, doctors were beginning to lower his medications.

The whole community is shocked to hear that Wilkins, who was the custodian at Campobello-Gramling Elementary School for decades, may have been hurt. Most people in town knew him as the man who walks up Asheville Highway every morning, now to volunteer at his former place of employment.

Douglas Wilkins said that he got to the home they share Sunday night, and since he didn't see Tom, he assumed Tom went to sleep early. It was early Monday morning that he realized that Tom was there. Douglas said he found him lying on his bedroom floor, badly beaten, and that his wallet was missing.

People in the community describe Tom Wilkins as the, "One of the finest people you'd want to meet." Richard Tucker said that Tom was, "Always friendly, loves people. I can't understand nobody ever hurting the man."

The school put out a statement Wednesday, calling Tom Wilkins, their "most treasured volunteer." They send their well wishes and prayers for a speedy recovery and they hope to see him back at Campobello-Gramling, soon.

The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office is investigating what happened. They're waiting for Wilkins' health to improve, so they can hear directly from him what may have happened on Sunday.
