A Gaffney man pleaded guilty to killing his adoptive mother and stuffing her body in a garbage can in court on Friday.
A spokesperson for the solicitor's office said Brandon Scott Knuckles, 45, pleaded guilty to murder, financial transaction card fraud, financial transaction card theft and possession of a stolen vehicle.
Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said the body of 78-year-old Marjorie Knuckles was found inside a rolling trash can outside her Hetty Hill Street home about 9:40 a.m. on Feb. 3 after one of her friends came by to check on her.
When the friend went to take out the trash, she discovered the city-issued cart had been moved from the back porch area to behind a small storage building in the backyard, Fowler said. He said when she opened the can to put the trash inside, she found Knuckles' body inside.
After initially claiming to know nothing of his mother's disappearance, Brandon Knuckles later admitted to police that he to beat up and choked his mother during an argument, according to the solicitor's office.
Brandon Knuckles used his mom's credit card 10 times between the time of her death and his arrest, according to prosecutors.
Knuckles was sentenced to 35 years in prison with no chance for parole.
"A 35-year prison term is a life prison sentence for Brandon Knuckles," Solicitor Barry Barnette said. "I hope the family can rest easier throughout the holiday season knowing the court case is over."
