PLATTE COUNTY, MO (KCTV) -

A man headed to the courthouse to pay his past due taxes, and wound up getting busted for stealing a car, authorities said.

The Platte County Sheriff's Office said 38-year-old Shawn M. Simmer drove a stolen 1985 Chevrolet Celebrity to the Platte County government complex to pay his taxes Thursday.

While getting out of the stolen vehicle, Simmer apparently dropped his cell phone because, a short time later, a detective was walking through the parking lot and noticed a cell phone laying on the ground next to the Chevrolet Celebrity. The sheriff's office said the detective, wanting to track down the owner of the phone, figured she'd best be able to do that by running the license plate of the vehicle it sat next to.

That's when the records popped up saying the vehicle was stolen Tuesday from a home in Gladstone, MO.

"Wise would definitely be a word you would not describe (the situation with)," said Lt. Jerin Almond of the Platte County Sheriff's Office. "That's kind of like walking into the sheriff's office or a police department knowing maybe you had a warrant for your arrest and went in to make a report."

After a short amount of time, Simmer returned to the vehicle and tried to leave, but detectives stopped and arrested him.

"Sometimes some cases are kind of handed to you in your lap and we appreciate them," Almond said.

Simmer has been charged with tampering with a motor vehicle and he is currently in the Platte County Detention Center with a $10,000 bond.

The vehicle was returned to the owner. Ironically, Simmer was at the courthouse to pay the taxes on a car in his name. Deputies don't know the status of that car.
