Minneapolis, MN (FOX Carolina) -

Target has released a statement to its customers about a security breach which reports said may have compromised 40 million credit and debit cards, and announced Friday they will be offering a 10% discount this weekend in response to the credit card hack.

"We wanted to make you aware of unauthorized access to Target payment card data," the letter opens.

"The unauthorized access may impact guests who made credit or debit card purchases in our U.S. stores from Nov. 27 to Dec. 15, 2013," it reads.

Target officials went on to say they began investigating as soon as they learned of the security breach and have figured out that the information compromised includes customers' names, credit or debit card numbers, and the cards expiration date and security codes.

"We recommend that you closely review the information provided in this letter for some steps that you may take to protect yourself against potential misuse of your credit and debit information," the letter continues.

The letter goes on to list steps on how to request a security freeze if your card has been compromised. To read more, click here
