COLUMBIA, SC (AP) -

A convicted sex offender who fled Rhode Island has been found working at a hotel in Columbia, S.C.

The Providence Journal reports that Luis Ortiz was convicted in 2000 of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl in Pawtucket and was sentenced to 10 years, with 42 months in prison. When he was released he was to have registered as a sex offender but failed to do so.

Deputy C.J. Wyant, who leads the U.S. Marshals Service's sex offender task force in Providence, says the 40-year-old Ortiz was arrested in January for failing to register as a sex offender. Wyant says he disappeared when he was released on bail.

Wyant says Ortiz waived extradition on Monday and will be returned to Rhode Island.

It was not known Tuesday if he's represented by a lawyer.
