NEWBERRY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Newberry County Sheriff's Office announced Tuesday they have arrested a person in a murder that happened earlier in December.

The release states 76-year-old Charles Butler of Chambersburg, PA was arrested Monday night by the Chambersburg Police Department on a murder warrant issued by Newberry County deputies.

The release states the warrant was issued after Butler's estranged wife, 72-year-old Andrenna Butler of Newberry, was found unresponsive in her home by a friend back on Dec. 21.

Deputies said Butler is being held on those warrants awaiting extradition hearings.

Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton announced that Ms. Butler died as the result of a single gunshot wound to the head with the manner of death being a homicide.

The release states the warrant was obtained after an investigation by the Newberry County Sheriff's Office, SLED and the Lexington County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies said the couple had been married for over 50 years prior to their separation and Mr. Butler moving to Pennsylvania.

Once the extradition process is completed, Butler will be returned to Newberry County for court proceedings.

According to the release, deputies believe this was an isolated incident, and the community is not in any danger.
