Dozens of last-minute shoppers in Maryvale received an early present on Christmas Eve from a seven-year-old girl.
"Here's a gift card from Thomas Road Baptist Church," Cari Leger, 7, said.
Leger and her friends at the Thomas Road Baptist Church gave away $1,000 worth of gift cards Tuesday morning, giving complete strangers a little something extra to spend at the grocery story or at the pump this holiday season.
Pastor Daniel Dennis says it was an idea his church had to spread holiday cheer.
"Churches are giving away lots of different things." Dennis said, "No one had done this so we thought we'd give it a try this year."
Dennis and Leger picked random recipients in Maryvale and asked for nothing but a smile and a 'thank you' in return. At just seven years old, Cari Leger says helping others is what the season is all about.
"That's what I really like," she said. "Especially when it's in a time of need."
Cari said her favorite part was giving to other families with children and every hand-off ended with the same message: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
