GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Target is issuing an advisory for REDCard holders after a breach of debit and credit card information was discovered earlier this month.

In an email to customers, Target said they had been receiving high call volumes from customers, and want to clear up any information people might have about the security breach and what cardholders need to know.

The retailer advised that customers do not need to call Target's customer service line unless charges are found on statements the customer didn't make.

Additionally, Target said that customers will not be held liable for any fraudulent charges on those cards.

The REDCard is the retailer's official card, which is available in debit and credit varieties, and offers discounts for its customers.

Target said they've upped their fraud detection and are offering free credit monitoring for a year to any and all Target customers affected by the breach.

Nearly 40 million credit and debit card numbers were compromised in the breach, which hit customers who bought items from the chain between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15.

People who still need further assistance are asked to go by Target's website or call 1-866-852-8680.
