Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said a 40-year-old died after being pinned underneath his Mercury Cougar on Saturday.

The victim was identified as Joseph Michael Hill, Sr. of Blacksburg.

"Mr. Hill was in the driveway of his residence when the incident occurred just before 4 p.m. He was underneath his Mercury Cougar working on the exhaust system when one of two floor jacks that was being used to elevate the vehicle gave way causing it to fall to the ground pinning Mr. Hill," Fowler said.

Hill was taken to Novant Health Gaffney Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, according to Fowler.

The coroner said Hill died from asphyxiation.

The death was ruled an accident.
