CAMPOBELLO, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A former janitor for Campobello-Gramling School has died after his family said he was found lying on a bedroom floor, badly beaten.

The Spartanburg Co. Coroner's Office said Tom Wilkins died Sunday at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. His family said he had been in the intensive care unit since Dec. 16.

Wilkins was a custodian for decades and was most recently a volunteer at the school.

Wilkins' brother Douglas told FOX Carolina earlier this month that he found his brother lying on the floor of his bedroom, badly beaten with his wallet missing.

In a statement to FOX Carolina, Campobello-Gramling School Principal John Hodge said that staff and faculty in the school district "are deeply saddened by the death of Tom Wilkins. Our condolences go out to his family."

Hodge added, "He was an icon to (the school) and was loved by all."

Spartanburg Co. deputies said Tuesday that the investigation into Wilkins' death is ongoing.

Authorities said there were no signs of foul play in their initial call to Wilkins' home earlier this month.

The coroner Rusty Clevenger performed an autopsy on Monday evening, and said more testing will be required to determine the manner of death.
