CARROLL COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

A 7-year-old girl is recovering after falling 50-feet into a well Monday afternoon. Rescue crews airlifted the child from Whitesberg in Carroll County to Children's Hospital of Atlanta at Egleston.

Fire Chief Scott Blue said the girl was playing with her sister on and around the well outside their grandmother's house when she fell in, plummeting 50 feet.

The sister alerted their grandmother, who called for help. Neighbors said they could hear the little girl yelling as they frantically waited for rescue crews to arrive. Firefighters then used ropes to lower the smallest man on their crew to the bottom of the well.

"As you're going down, it's tight. You can't really look down or up. If you looked up, things fall in your eyes. If you look down, you can't see anything," Carroll County Fire Lt. Clayton Kirbo explained.

Once Kirbo got near the girl, he realized she was in an awkward position, making the rescue even tougher. The terrified girl begged the lieutenant to help her.

"I was talking to them up top and said something about letting me move or something. She grabbed my leg and said, 'No, don't!' The girl feared he was leaving her. "But I wasn't going nowhere. We'll stay down there together if we have to."

More than an hour later, crews pulled the little girl out safely, flying her to Atlanta for medical attention. Neighbor Andy Henry watched as the little girl surfaced and said she was responsive. "She was kind of crying, and her face was blue. Her nose was bloody (and) on her face, and her leg was broke. But she was alive."

"Could've been a lot worse. God was watching over her," said Kirbo.
