The Haywood County Sheriff's Office said Monday that people are falling victim to a scam by phone.
The sheriff's office said the victims receive a phone call saying they won a sweepstakes prize, such as money or a new car. The victims are told to send cash or prepaid debit cards to a specific address, often in New York. The victims are told that once payment is received, their winnings will be sent to them.
The Haywood County Sheriff's Office said the prizes are never delivered and that the calls typically originate outside of the United States.
The sheriff's office said Monday that the scam has been around for awhile but they reissued the warning after finding that people were continuing to fall victim to it.
