3 NC children possibly sickened by E. coli

LEXINGTON, NC (AP) -

Health officials in Davidson County are investigating a possible E. coli outbreak after three children have become ill.

The Davidson County Health Department confirmed Monday that two Tyro Middle School students had been hospitalized with a recent history of severe bloody diarrhea. A case of E. coli has been identified in a third child who has not been hospitalized and doesn't go to the same school as the other two children.

Officials say the two hospitalized children have already been treated with antibiotics, so lab tests don't pinpoint E. coli as the cause for their ailments.

E. coli is a bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration and, in the most severe cases, kidney failure. The very young, the elderly and those with weak immune systems are the most susceptible.
