GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Hospitals in the western Carolinas welcomed the first babies born in 2014 on Wednesday.

Bon Secours St. Francis Health Systems had its first newborn of 2014 just after 5 a.m. on Wednesday, the hospital announced.

Austin Taylor Vandiver was born to Taylor and Christina Vandiver of Greenville. He weighed 8 pounds, 4 ounces and joins older sister Isabelle.

"I knew we'd be close to being the New Year's baby when I started having contractions just after midnight as we were watching New Year's celebrations on TV. We're very excited and I like the attention our sweet baby boy is getting as he begins his life. It's reason to celebrate anyway, but this just makes it extra special," Austin's mother said in a release from the hospital.

Greenville Health Systems announced the first baby to arrive at their hospital on the new year was born at 1:54 a.m. They said the baby boy was 8 pounds, 3 ounces and 21.5 inches long.  They said the boy's name is Karl D. Lanier III. He was born to Karl D. Lanier II and Rosita Ellington.

Anmed Women and Children's Hospital's first born child in 2014 was Bridget Catherine Dery at 3:36 a.m. Bridget weighed 9 pounds, 2 ounces when she was born to her parents Emily and Justin Dery.

In Spartanburg, Camila Dominguez was the first child born at Spartanburg Regional Health Systems in 2014. She was born at 4:38 a.m. and weighed 6 pounds, 3 ounces. Camila is the first child of Damian and Diana Dominguez.

The first baby born at Mission Hospital in Asheville was Celeste Spruce. Celeste was born at 1:12 a.m. to her parents Brook and Shawn Spruce of Cherokee. Celeste's mother said the baby is "doing fabulously."
