A Yancey County woman is behind bars after deputies said she shot and killed her ex-husband, though the shooting was initially reported as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Yancey County deputies said someone called 911 on Dec. 18 to report that William Morrow Jr., 44, shot himself in the head at a home on Cove Mountain Road about 9:15 p.m.

As investigators responded to the scene, deputies said they determined that Morrow did not shoot himself. He was airlifted to the hospital but died on Dec. 19.

Deputies said they did not believe Morrow show himself and saw a car at the home that had been in a recent crash. According to deputies, they spoke with Morrow's first ex-wife at the home, who was the person who called 911.

Robyn Morrow, 41, spoke with deputies and "freely gave a statement that she had shot him," according to a sheriff's office news release. Deputies said she did not give a reason for shooting Morrow but did say it was not in self-defense.

Deputies said William Morrow was a distinguished United States Marine, who had retired within the past few years. They said the couple had two children, both of which are in the military service.

Robyn Morrow was initially arrested on Dec. 19 and charged with assault with a deadly weapon, inflicting serious injury with the intent to kill, deputies said. They said her charge was upgraded to murder later that day after William Morrow passed. She is being held without bond at the county jail.
