UNION, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Union police said they are investigating a burglary and theft from a local funeral home after three  caskets, 30 bottles of embalming fluid and other items went missing.

Police were called to Gibson and Brown Funeral Home on Ravenscroft Street on Monday after some lights in the sanctuary were discovered missing and the embalming room door was open, which is normally never left open, according to the man who looks after the funeral home.

According to the police report, in addition to the lamps, caskets and embalming fluids, a mortuary stretcher, a copy machine, gold-plated church trucks, 20 register books and a register stand were also reported stolen. Police said the stolen items were valued at more than $15,000.

Funeral planners Clinton Gregory Jr. and Clinton Gregory Sr. said they are baffled by the theft.

"I feel like the individual that was involved - they had a knowledge of what they needed to get out of here," said Clinton Gregory Jr. "The average person doesn't have a clue of what goes on inside a mortuary."

Police said a window appeared to have been pried open but was found closed.

So far, police have not released any details about possible suspects in the case.

Anyone with information about the break-in should contact the Union Public Safety Department.
