Anderson Co. to open emergency shelter during frigid nights

ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

As the cold weather is expected to continue Monday, Anderson County Emergency Services plans to open a shelter for people who think their living arrangements may not be able to take single-digit temperatures.

Emergency Services Director Taylor Jones said his department has received many calls of concern about the incoming winter blast.

Jones said the Anderson County Civic Center will open Monday at 6 p.m. as an emergency shelter. The shelter may also open on Tuesday and/or Wednesday night, if officials determine it is needed.

He acknowledged that many homes may not be able to provide adequate heat or protection, so anyone who has emergency heating needs can get warm at the shelter.

The shelter at the Civic Center will be available on a first come, first serve basis, to people and pets. Snacks and water will also be available.

Jones said that Anderson County Emergency Services staff members along with other county agencies will be on hand to help those in need.

Anderson County Sheriff John Skipper urges anyone in need to take advantage of the shelter and also discourages them from using unsafe secondary heating options, such as kerosene heaters, to prevent fires.

If people need transportation to the center, they can call 864-260-4444 for assistance.
