LANDRUM, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Spartanburg County Coroner said an Upstate teen has died following a Monday night crash in Landrum.

The coroner said the single-vehicle wreck happened around 9:40 p.m. along Landrum Mill Road.

The coroner identified the victim as 17-year-old Michael Wessinger of Landrum. Authorities said he was a junior at Landrum High School.

Troopers said a Ford Mustang was headed west near Pillburgh Circle when the vehicle veered off the right side of the road and hit a tree.

"He appeared to have overcorrected after crossing a double yellow line; returning to his lane of travel before leaving the roadway striking a tree," said Coroner Rusty Clevenger.

The teen died at the scene and was not wearing a seatbelt.  The coroner said the cause and manner of death are awaiting toxicology results.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Colin's family during this difficult time," stated Landrum High School Principal Brian Sherman. "Our students and faculty have lost a wonderful young man and our hearts are very heavy today."

Counselors, local clergy and additional staff will be on hand at Landrum High School to help students and faculty cope with Wessinger's death.
