ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

A water leak closed several roads near the University of North Carolina Asheville campus Tuesday morning, amidst record-breaking low temperatures.

Asheville dispatchers said crews have barricaded sections of Merrimon Avenue, W.T. Weaver Boulevard, Founders Drive, Sherwood Road and Forest Hill Drive because of the leak.

Dispatchers said the roads will be closed until the weather warms up. As of 10 a.m., temperatures were coming in at 1 degrees in Asheville.

FOX Carolina crews at the scene said a public works employee believes someone opened a fire hydrant, spraying water everyone that quickly froze in the bitter temps.
