Mauldin daycare evacuated after frozen pipes burst in ceiling

MAULDIN, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Mauldin firefighters were called to a local daycare Tuesday afternoon after frozen pipes burst, causing part of the ceiling to collapse and an evacuation at the school.

Mauldin Fire Chief Russell Sapp said the burst happened at Gateway Academy Child Development Center at 798 East Butler Rd. He said everyone was evacuated from the building.

Sapp said they have received several calls for burst pipes in the past couple of hours. He said many of the pipes that burst were supposed to be protected from freezing up by anti-freeze systems or valves that kept water out of vulnerable areas, but they still froze.

Danielle Coley, director of Gateway Academy, said the building was evacuated but none of the children were in danger. Coley said the children were moved to their evacuation site quickly.

According to Coley, a portion of the ceiling started to collapse and they have already started the cleanup process.

Coley said the families will be serviced at their sister school, located on Pelham Road until the Mauldin location is ready.
