Duke Energy customers used more energy than any previous winter day, the company said after the cold spell that moved through nation.

Some areas experience outages during the severe weather, which Duke said was caused by the heavy usage during the cold weather on Monday.

The company asked its customers to conserve electricity with more cold temperatures expected in the future.

Duke suggests customers turn off lights and unplug appliances to help avoid future outages.

Thousands of customers were without power in several Upstate counties on Monday evening. Oconee County was hit the worst with almost 4,000 customers reported without power, according to Duke's website.
