GAFFNEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The coroner said he is investigating after a man's body was found across from a homeless shelter in Cherokee County on Tuesday morning.

The coroner, Dennis Fowler, said the man was brought to the Harbor of Hope shelter at 5:30 p.m. on Monday after he told attendants that he did not have heat in his home.

"Harbor of Hope officials said the man was logged in and ate dinner at the facility. After finishing his meal, he was seen in the lobby area of the facility by staff members.  Video surveillance last captured him at 7:25 p.m. and no one ever saw him again," Fowler said.

A cab driver discovered the man's body just off Henderson Street behind Piedmont Natural Gas Company at 7:50 a.m.

Fowler said the man could have been sick when he left the shelter when the temperatures were in the single digits.

Fowler has identified the man as 58-year-old Hank Duane Reynolds, of Chesnee.

"My investigation indicates Reynolds could have been sick when he left and just walked across the road and lay down in the field. I have scheduled an autopsy for Wednesday morning to assist in my determining if he died from a medical condition prior to hypothermia caused by single-digit temperatures," Fowler said.

Fowler said hypothermia did play a role in Reynolds' death, but the cause and manner of death are pending toxicology results.
