ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Homes in Anderson County had to be evacuated after a natural gas leak on Wednesday.

Fort Hill Natural Gas was doing maintenance around noon when a line was ruptured and started leaking natural gas along Cheddar Road behind Family Dollar, according to Taylor Jones of Anderson County Emergency Management.

Jones said a reverse 911 call was made to residents within a quarter mile of the leak, telling them to shelter in place and kill ignition sources.

Four homes in the area were evacuated, according to Jones.

Whitfield Fire Department responded to the leak and the chief was the one who made the call to evacuate the homes, Jones said.
