COLUMBIA, SC (AP) -

Gov. Nikki Haley wants to improve education in South Carolina by providing more money for schools educating poor children, hiring more reading coaches and improving technology.

Haley announced her plans Wednesday at an elementary school in West Columbia. She says this will be the first year of a multiyear effort to transform South Carolina schools.

The governor's plan would send an extra $97 million to schools that teach children in poverty, $30 million to hire additional reading coaches in elementary schools and $29 million to improve Internet capabilities in communities and schools.

Teacher advocacy groups say they are encouraged by her plans.

Haley also wants lawmakers to simplify the state's complicated school-funding formula.

Haley hosted several closed-door meetings last year with teachers, administrators and legislators before releasing her plan.
