SPARTANBURG, SC (AP) -
The Southern Conference and the Atlantic Sun Conference are teaming up for men's and women's lacrosse leagues.
The leagues announced the partnership Thursday. The SoCon will take over and administer conference play for men's lacrosse while the Atlantic Sun will continue sponsoring women's lacrosse.
The Atlantic Sun will sponsor a six-team men's lacrosse league competing for an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The Southern Conference will take over that group next season.
The A-Sun will sponsor a six-team women's league this season with that number growing to eight for the 2014-15 academic year.
Southern Conference commissioner John Iamarino says he's grateful for the A-Sun's cooperation. He said that means schools with lacrosse programs or who want to start the sport can have a regional schedule that makes sense.
