GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Whenever you see Katie Cook, you probably also see her daughter. Cook said her little girl will be two years old in March.

"We're in the car a lot, running errands and stuff," Cook said.

And that's why she said making her car seat secure is most important to her.

"We actually put her in the center of the car, so if we were to ever get into an accident, her car seat would be center so she wouldn't get too banged on either side," she said.

Right now, the law states any child under six years old can't sit in a front passenger seat, and if your child is five years old or younger, he or she must be in a car seat or a booster.

"To me, it's just important to have her in there as long as necessary," Cook said.

And on Thursday, state Sen. Thomas Alexander, who represents Oconee and Pickens Counties said research supports Cook's concerns.

He pre-filed a bill back in December that could potentially raise the age requirement for a child to be in a booster to seven years old and could keep them out of a front seat until they're 13 years old.

"Really, it's all about safety, trying to protect lives," Alexander said.

He said statistics show wrecks are the leading cause of death for children under 19 years old.

"By having them in the back seat, then obviously it is a safety feature from that stand point," Alexander said.

He said right now the bill is just a proposal based on national recommendations set by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

"If they've got children in their car these are what the recommendations are," he said.

And Cook said she's rolling with whatever she thinks will keep her child safe.

Alexander said he's also working with administrators with the Children's Trust of South Carolina on the recommendations.
