Seven kids - one as young as 4 -  were taken from their home after Spartanburg County investigators said the home was found in horrible condition.

Christy Winkler, 35, and Mark Winkler, 40, are facing seven counts each of child neglect charges. Deputies said the Department of Social Services contacted them in October to investigate the living conditions at the couple's home.

Deputies said they found roaches everywhere, including inside the refrigerator, crawling over the floors and ceilings, and one fell on the head of an investigator while they were at the home.

According to the deputy's report, the home's only heat source was an electric heater in the living room and the children slept on bed-like pallets in the parents' room. Deputies said there was also a strong smell of feces from outside of the home because the septic tank in the back yard did not have a lid on it, exposing the raw sewage.

When deputies told the Winklers that their children could not stay in the home and would be placed in state custody because they could not find someone to take care of them, deputies said Mark Winkler became so upset he "threw a pumpkin out the door, which caused it to smash all over the front porch and almost hit [a deputy] in the head."

According to deputies, the children were neglected to the point they were developmentally delayed. Deputies said the older children, ages 9 and 10, were primarily responsible for taking care of the younger children.

The Winklers have been released from the Spartanburg County Detention Center.
