COLUMBIA, SC (AP) -

The University of South Carolina School of Medicine is bestowing its 92 second-year medical students their white physician coats in a special ceremony.

The event, known as a "pledge of commitment" ceremony, is scheduled for Friday at 5 p.m. at the Koger Center in Columbia.

The ceremony symbolizes the students' entrance into the medical profession.

USC alumnus Scott Spann, an orthopedic spine surgeon based in Austin, Texas, is speaking to the students.

Spann was an all-American swimmer at the University of Texas prior to attending medical school at USC. In 2005, a cycling accident left him paralyzed from the neck down. Through aggressive treatment and rehabilitation, he recovered from his major spinal cord injury and returned to his medical practice six months after the accident.
